On The TV Lately

Quite a few hits to my blog site comes from people searching the web for items linked to TV3’s “Mencari Cinta” reality show. I feel a bit guilty that they ended up at my site instead just because I happened to mention the show the first night it aired. I guess that goes to show that there were fans of the show out there looking for more information about it. I have to say that I’m also hooked to watching the series. It’s like watching an accident, you know you shouldn’t linger but you just can’t help yourself wanting to know who crashed and burn. Watching this week’s episode I just had to ask WTH with the show turning into “Survivor” with the tribe mates voting out one of their own.

BTW ... the reason I don’t recap this series is because it’s too easy to get snarky about the contestants that it won’t be much fun to do. That plus I personally know one of the contestants so it just felt strange to snark on them week after week.

Also new on TV today is this year’s Petronas Merdeka Day advertisement. For quite a few years now, Petronas has been spending money for a new promotional advertisement campaign every Merdeka Day. I’ve always found them really fun and very memorable to watch. Like in previous years, this ad showed a slice of live for those living in Malaysia and usually would have the message of the value of our independence. I guess that the message of the ads were that we should look to move forward even when hampered by difficulties that were not of our choosing. Just watching the old man in the ad telling his story growing up as a crippled child and having to cope with his disability just left me with warm and fuzzy feelings inside.

I wonder if Yasmin Ahmad did these ads for Petronas again this year?

The Last Beam Up

(Image curtesy of StarTrek.com)

Definitely a big news day what with the lifting of the Malaysian ringgit peg to the US dollar, the same happening in China and the new bombings in London late this evening. One piece of news that kinda hit me personally today is the news of the death of James Doohan who played Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the classic Star Trek show. I actually met him in person while I was in the US at one of his signing session and he was the first actual American celebrity that I have ever met in my life so it was a big thing for me especially when I am such a big Trekkie geek. He shook my hand, asked for my name and asked where I was from. I got an autographed photo of him in his Trek uniform that unfortunately I lost when I shipped my stuff home after graduation. I may have lost the signed photo but I will never forget that Trekkie geek moment of excitement of meeting him in person.

The final frontier awaits you, Scotty. The warp cores are in good hands and transporters buffers are all clear for transport. It’s time for you to beam up.

See you on the flip side.

New Reality Show on TV3

I’m currently watching the latest TV3 reality show, “Mencari Cinta” (Looking for Love) and am trying very hard to not crack up like loon. For one thing, some of the guys supposedly on the show to find themselves a wife are pinging my often faulty gaydar like crazy. They might just be some metrosexuals gone overboard but man I know some drag queens who are butcher than they are. The thing is I wouldn’t be totally out of place if I was put amongst them both physically and personality wise.

I just know that my mum will call me up to mention about the show soon.

Just what I need, another thing that my mum will ask me to try out for if I don’t get married soon. It’s bad enough that she carries my photo around to introduce me to other people as potential a suitors for their eligible daughters every other day. Now I have this to contend with.

I may just be paranoid but I just know that they (my family) are currently cooking up a plot to enroll me into the show next season as they are sitting in front of the TV watching this show.

All-Star Survivor is Coming

I just heard that they have announced the contestants for the all-star Survivor edition for season 8 debuting this coming Feb 1st. They will have four from Survivor 1- Pulau Tiga, five from Survivor 2 – Australian Outback, three from Survivor 3 - Africa, two from Survivor 4 – Marquesas, Survivor 5 - one from Thailand, two from Survivor 6 – The Amazon and one from Survivor 7 – Pearl Island.

The list of contestant as listed at CBS.com and the thing that I remember most about them when they were first on the show:

1.Alicia (Australian Outback) – The infamous Miss Finger-Waving of the Australian season.

2.Amber (Australian Outback) – Try as I might, I can’t remember a single outstanding thing that she did on her season.

3.Colby (Australian Outback) – Hmm... this I certainly still remember and have to say is my early pick to go all the way if not just because I want to see him shirtless week after week.

4.Ethan (Africa) – The soccer playing Moppet who conquered Africa without losing too much of his soul in the process.

5.Jenna L (Pulau Tiga) – Nothing stands out in my mind for now for this contestant.

6.Jenna M (Amazon) – Getting naked for peanut butter in front of a global audience. It must be really premium peanut butter.

7.Jerri (Australian Outback) – She has the distinction of being the Queen B*tch for being the most manipulative of all the female Survivor contestants to date.

8.Kathy (Marquesas) – I have no recollection of her time on the show. I know she did something important to last that long in Marquesas but it escapes me for the moment.

9.Lex (Africa) – Scary guy with scary tattoos with the scary eyes scaring half of Africa every time he stares at you.

10.Richard (Pulau Tiga) – 1st sole Survivor of the franchise and I have to say the idea of him going naked again on TV scares the heck out of me.

11.Rob C. (Amazon) – Shares the title of the “Best Survivor Player Who Didn’t Win” with Rupert. He played the game really well but ran out of luck towards the end.

12.Rob M. (Marquesas) – Boston Rob... nice on the eyes but dumb as rocks.

13.Rudy (Pulau Tiga) – The oldest contestant of them all and a crotchety favorite of mine among all the older Survivors.

14.Rupert (Pearl Island) – Hagrid look-alike who was an audience favorite early on his season but quickly became more tiresome as the season progressed.

15.Shii Ann (Thailand) – The “She-Devil” of Thailand. I will never forget the chicken-eating incident that grossed out her tribemates. I guess that the Asian thing of being able to eat almost every part of a chicken is hard to swallow for some.

16.Susan (Pulau Tiga) – The best jury question/statement every. She really let it rip and she will always be remembered for it. No one ever came close since.

17.Tina (Australian Outback) – The sweet soccer mom who won the million dollars in the second season of Survivor. I still think that she and Colby are still my favorite final two Survivors who went to the finals.

18.Tom (Africa) – His exposed butt-crack with that feather sticking out of it in one of the challenges on his season still gives me nightmares.

It would be interesting to see if old alliance and ties from their old seasons will resurface again in this new season. I have to say that the contestant selected for this all-star edition of this popular reality show seems to be well balanced in terms of popularity and entertainment factors. It would be interesting to see how this turns out come 1st Feb. For the time being, I’ll be rooting for my two all-time favorite Survivors, Colby and Tina.

Same old, same old

A few things before I sign-off for the day.

The Amazing Race 4 recaps have been posted on TWOP today. As usual I have to catch myself from laughing out loud while reading it. Looking forward for this season actually since it does have it share of eye candy. Of course I don't actually have Astro or AXN so I would have to be content on reading the snark rather than watching it. BTW ... there are some really *interesting* pictures in the forum thread about the current racers.

Planing to go though 4 episodes of X-Files season 7 DVD if there is nothing good on TV tonight. Since it's Monday, I think this will be the case. My friends always rag on me for watching too much TV. It's not like I have any choice ... I don't have a life !!! I'm too introverted to go out and meet people. Too lazy to join in any chat sessions. Too scared to pickup a phone and call someone. Not that I'm being swamped by offers for dates anyway.

Why the fear? I guess its too long being in the mindset that people look up to you and that you have to set an example to other people. Maybe just because I'm too scared that once I cross that line, I won't want to turn back or even that I don't want this in the first place. BS aside ... I'm definitely scared of finding out. Petrified of coming out of the closet.

Until I overcome this fear, I live life to the fullest and to the best of my ability.

Watching Too Much TV

Pre blog musings.

Thought that I start off with some stuff from earlier this week.

Sub: Dawson's Creek
I'm really sad that to hear that this series has ended :( I really liked this series ... from what I manage to watch on M'sian TV and from the time I was in the States. I would also really miss my weekly DC recaps fix from http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com ... they really don't spare the snark!

From the recaps and forum at the TWOP site, I gather that the series finale was well recieved and that many were pleased with how the J/P/D triangle got sorted out finally. Also read that MW ran circles around everybody else in terms of acting ... sigh ... now I just have to be patient and wait until they release DC S6 on DVD. Hopefully it would not be a long wait ... until then I have to be satisfied with DC S1 DVD set.

BTW ... Jackers and Doug ... sigh. I'll pay good money to see that.

Sub: Babylon 5 Season 2.
Finally got around to listen to the audio commentary from the latest B5 DVD release last night and throughly enjoyed it. JMS's track is as enjoyable as B5 S1 collection though he does seem to be obsessed about hair and tables this time around. The best audio track has to be the cast commentary ... it's a total laugh riot! The chia pet hair comment really crack me up.

The set is definitely a keeper. I guess that I should start saving for future sets. Man ... I can just hear my credit card groaning. Last year was from the ST:TNG sets ... this year it's the B5, Angel & DC sets. Not to mention the X-Files set ... grrr.

Note to self : Should plan to get more selves for the DVD's. Running out of space soon with the set boxes.

Sub: Misc.
It's Thusday so tonight is Angel night. They just started showing season 3 on TV2 and I don't want to miss and episode. Yeah ... I've read the recaps on TWOP many, many times over but so what. Seeing goofy, dopey DB again every week now is definitely a high point of the week. I know ... it's pathetic but hey ... I'll take whatever I can get.
